Waiting...
Got a call yesterday that my 92 year old great grandfather (Grumpsy) had taken a turn for the worse. I wasn't even aware that he was sick. Mum rang me and said she was going to visit him - he's wasn't expected to make it through to today, but I haven't heard anything yet - so me, mum, my sis and bro took the 1.5 hr drive to Wonthaggi to see him off.
I nearly cried when I first saw him because he was so frail. I haven't seen him since last Dec, and the poor old duffa was asleep with he mouth open and his false teeth out. He didn't wake up while we were there, but he'd had some morphine so he was comfortable.
Grumps used to drive ambulances in WWII and he was deafened by a bomb blast. My whole life it was hard to understand what he was saying to me, so I used to nod and smile and pretend I knew what was going on. LOL! He used to try and cheat at pool when we played and I remember Mum saying that when she fell pregnant with me at 18 he just had the biggest grin on his face (unlike the other unimpressed family members)
I am his eldest great grand child and I will always remember him as the most kind, fuddy duddy old man I've known. I hope he goes peacefully in his sleep today and I hope he knew we were there yesterday to say farewell.
Love ya Grumpsy. Nanna's waiting...
